The Label Fable

POSTCARD

Still the greatest. The first significant label to grow out of punk, in that it was run by an opinionated, visionary figure full of spite and ambition and youthful vigour, who dared to be different. Significant in the loving attention to detail, packaging and self-mythologising. Commendably, Alan Horne kept the roster restricted to a chosen few. Despite having its image twisted time and again, the music still sounds great, with Orange Juice’s gifted way with words and melody to Josef K’s scratchy capers. I still feel bitter that I cannot just walk into a shop and find anything by Josef K in the racks.
